ROO Video – From Sunrise to Sunset: ROO Runs in Dubrovnik

I recently returned from two weeks in Dubrovnik, Croatia, visiting with my grandfather and extended family. Dubrovnik is a medieval walled city, built on the side of a mountain range, overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Although it is a summer-goers paradise, it is not the easiest place for a continuous run, as it is filled with hills and stairs. The majority of my runs in Dubrovnik were on a 1-mile paved walking path that hugged the coastline, overlooking the old city walls. There were two options for running on this road: run up hill for a mile and then run down …

ROO Video: Lokrum Island Trail Run

This past summer, I had the privilege of spending three weeks in Dubrovnik, Croatia with my maternal grandparents who are from and live there. From the window of my bedroom, I would look out at the Adriatic Sea with Lokrum Island in the foreground. I took my first GoPro excursion on Lokrum, recording the ferry ride and trail run around the island. In my efforts to wish away winter, I decided to revisit my Lokrum footage and share my adventure with all of you. Music by Lord Huron, “Time to Run”

Chocolate Raw Love Milk

Some people drink coffee in the mornings to wake them up, I opt-for a natural buzz that comes from raw cocoa. This milk was inspired by Raw Love, a raw vegan restaurant in Tulum that I ate many meals at during my recent tropical getaway. Fresh coconuts were plentiful in Meixco and I would often find unopened coconuts scattered on the roads where I ran. I was tempted to pack some of them for my journey home. This milk brings me right back to the vibrant cuisine of Raw Love, owned by the calmest power couple I’ve ever met, Adan …

Redefining Detox: A Week-Long Exploration

Usually when someone tells me they are participating in a detox, I imagine an intense juice cleanse or extreme diet that sounds like no fun. Instead, I used my recent winter getaway in Tulum, Mexico, as a way to redefine detox. 1. Watch Free As someone who is usually tied to a busy schedule, it was liberating to be without a watch — following my internal clock for resting, eating, yoga, swimming, sleeping (and repeat). 2. Technology Free at Meals I am guilty of multitasking when eating— usually uploading a podcast while eating breakfast at the same time. Without the distraction of technology …

Yaya Journal 9: Learning Languages on the Run

We headed out for my final run, our second run of the day— an easy 40 minutes through farm fields and forest. In Ethiopian running culture, groups of runners run in a single line. I have never asked the exact reason for this, but would guess it is because the terrain can be narrow and unpredictable. There is also a system in which everyone points to the ground or snaps their fingers when crossing an uneven patch of land — alerting the person behind them to tread cautiously. Despite running in a line formation, laughter and chatter provided the soundtrack …
